파랑_

Joni Mitchell의  앨범은 대중음악 역사에서 손에 꼽히는 명반으로, 앨범의 모든 곡의 작사는 조니 미첼이 직접 썼다. 앨범 전체는 특유의 담담한 어조와 음색으로 사랑과 이별, 상실로 연결되는 긴 감정의 터널을 통과한다. “Blue here is a shell for you” 위 문장은 그 앨범에 실린 대표곡인의 구절이다. 조니 미첼은 파란색의 이미지가 피부 밑 공간에 채워지는 타투처럼, ‘푸른 껍질 속에 가라앉은 감정’ 같은 것이라고 표현한다. 정지윤 작가의 그림의 주된 색채는 파랑이다. 여기에는 특정 감정이 드러나지 않는다. 온도가 절제된 그의 파란색 표면에는 빛에 의한 색조와 밝고 어두운 명도만이 존재한다. 마치 푸른 바탕의 종이 위에 빛에 의해 작용하는 청사진(blue print)의 원리를 닮았다. 푸른 표면 위로 담담하고 객관 적인 작가의 시선이 그대로 솟아난다. 그 단순하고 절제된 푸른 껍질 위로 관람자의 기억과 감각이 적극적으로 침투된다.

얼굴들_

우리의 일상 속 SNS나 블로그에는 수많은 얼굴들이 노출되어 있다. 매끄러운 표면 위로 자신의 하루를 타인과 연결하기를 바라는 얼굴들이 빠르게 미끄러져 내린다. 정지윤 작가의 그림 속 얼굴들은 이러한 웹에서 수집한 이미지이다. 그는 손가락으로 눌러서 휙휙 지나쳐 버릴 수 있는 순간의 얼굴들을 기억하고 저장한다. 이 얼굴들이 갖는 서사나 이야기는 휘발되고 얼굴 이라는 골격과 구조가 가지는 조형의 원리만이 드러난다. 그리고 마침내 솟아난 형태만이 진 실이 된다. 얼굴이라는 구조화된 공간적 구성안에서 쉽게 지나칠 수 있는 평범한 하루의 진실 된 모습들을 발견할 수 있다. 그림 속 인물들의 사실적 기억과는 관계없이 그림이 된 얼굴의 인상적 감각만이 실재가 된다. 이렇게 회화 속 얼굴들이 화면 밖 관객의 얼굴과 마주하면서 시간과 장소가 연결되고 또 다른 관계를 짓는다. 그것은 어제와 오늘처럼 끊임없이 이어지고 반복되며 또 다른 일상의 모습이 되어간다.

제스처_

그의 작품에는 언어로 설명될 수 없는 몸짓언어가 있다. 말과 글자가 통하지 않는 낯선 외국 에서 의사소통을 할 수 있는 유일한 수단은 몸짓언어이다. 그래서 그의 그림에 드러난 인물들은 대다수가 외국인이지만 어쩐지 낯설지가 않은 이유도 이러한 몸짓언어가 있기 때문이다. 인간의 신체만이 가지는 특유의 포즈, 자세, 표정들의 공통분모가 있어서 편안하다. 문자로 설명되지 않아도 충분히 읽어낼 수 있는 것, 시각을 통해서만 소통이 가능한 지점은 회화라는 매체가 가지는 큰 힘이다. 그의 그림에서 드러나는 인물의 몸짓언어는 작가 특유의 제스처와 행위를 통해 더욱 극대화된다. 빠르고 경쾌한 율동감 있는 터치들과 화면 위에 자유롭게 흩뿌려진 흔적들은 작가의 몸짓언어를 보여준다. 이러한 운동감을 따라가다 보면 우리는 인물이라 는 골격 속에 넘실대는 푸른 물결을 보게 된다. 자유롭게 흩어지고 뿌려진 물감의 흔적으로 인해서 본래의 형상은 흐트러지고 그 속에 감추어진 또 다른 형태가 솟아난다. 파도처럼 부수 며 밀고 당기기를 반복하는 이 푸른 물결은 언제나 시원하고 청량하다..

The entire album traverses a long tunnel of emotions—love, separation, and loss—through her distinctive, calm tone and voice. The line, “Blue here is a shell for you,” is from one of the album's most iconic songs. Joni Mitchell describes the image of blue as something like “feelings submerged within a blue shell,” akin to a tattoo that fills the space beneath the skin. The dominant color in the paintings of artist Jeong Ji-yoon is also blue. However, no specific emotions are revealed here. The temperature of his restrained blue surface only reflects hues affected by light, along with tones of brightness and darkness. It resembles the principle of a blueprint, where light interacts with a blue base. His calm and objective gaze rises directly from this blue surface. It is on this simple and restrained blue shell that the viewer's memories and senses actively infiltrate.

FacesCountless faces are exposed daily on our social media feeds and blogs. These faces, hoping to connect their day with others, slide quickly across smooth surfaces. The faces in Jeong Ji-yoon’s paintings are collected from such images on the web. He recalls and stores these fleeting faces, which can easily be swiped past with a finger. The narratives or stories behind these faces are fleeting, leaving only the structural principles of form and framework of a face. Ultimately, only the shape that emerges becomes the truth. Within the spatial composition of a face, one can discover the sincere aspects of an ordinary day that might otherwise be overlooked. Regardless of the realistic memories of the people depicted, only the impressive sensation of the painted faces remains as the reality. When these faces in the paintings meet the faces of viewers outside the canvas, time and space are linked, forming new relationships. This constant connection and repetition, like yesterday and today, evolves into another form of everyday life.

GesturesIn his work, there is a language of gestures that cannot be explained by words. In a foreign land where spoken language and written characters are unfamiliar, the only means of communication is through gestures. This is why the figures in his paintings, most of whom are foreigners, feel strangely familiar—because of this shared language of gestures. The unique poses, postures, and expressions inherent in the human body create a common denominator that feels comforting. What can be interpreted without words, only through sight, is a major strength of the medium of painting. The gesture language expressed in his works is further amplified through the artist’s unique gestures and actions. Fast, lively, rhythmic touches and freely scattered traces on the canvas reveal the artist's own gesture language. Following this sense of movement, one can see blue waves surging within the framework of the figures. The original form is distorted by the freely scattered paint traces, allowing another hidden shape to emerge. These blue waves, which crash, push, and pull like the tide, are always refreshing and cool.
