과몰입 주의 : Over-immersion

... 일상의 무수히 많은 색과 구체화된 음영들이 동시대의 이미지로 기능하며 시끄러운 잡음을 만들어낸다고 할 때, 정지윤의 회화는 필수요건이라고 여겨지던 것들을 과감하게 생략하고 배제함으로써 시간의 더께가 얹힌 듯 정돈된 안정감을 제시한다.

작가의 작품에는 일 획의 연속으로 생명을 부여받은 패턴화된 객체들이 등장한다. 화면 속 상황은 작가가 미디어 환경에서 차용한 이미지이지만, 단순 묘사나 재현에 그치지 않고 조형적 요소를 찾아 재해석되었다. 유려하게 미끄러지는 유닛의 붓 터치들, 흩뿌려진 액션 페인팅의 리듬감에 대비되는 단순화된 화면 구성은 캔버스에 압착해 놓은 듯 정지되어 보인다. 이는 연속적 시간 속에서 일순간 정지감을 느끼는 ‘몰입’의 속성과도 일맥상통한다.

정지윤의 회화가 더욱 균형 있어 보이는 이유는 몰입을 다루되, 간극의 중요성을 의도적으로 화면에 투영하기 때문이다. 중성적인 색감, 주제부와 여백의 비례, 대상의 구도와 배치, 정면을 응시하지 않음으로써 화면 너머와 마주하지 않는 인물들의 시선들, 익명성을 위한 서양인 모델의 선택 등 작가가 회화로서 대상 이미지의 측면들을 자기 이미지로 귀속시키지 않기 위해 구성하는 의도적 장치와 객체를 환원하는 과정의 연속이 두드러지게 나타난다.

아이러니하게도 이러한 간극의 내러티브는 작품과 마주할 때에 마치 풋낯을 조우한 듯 관람자로하여금 긴장과 호기심이 동반되는 이유가 된다. 이윽고 작가가 그러하였듯 관람자 역시 미디어 속 인물들에 대한 방관자로서 남지 않고 안온한 순간들에 몰입하는 주체자로 변모한다. 이러한 과정에서 푸른색의 모노톤은 에너지가 발산되는 형상들과 만나 차가운 인상을 포근하게 정돈하고 단순함에서 오는 자유를 연상시키며 리듬적 스타일의 궤를 이룬다. ...  -전시 서문 발췌

When the countless colors and concretized shadows of everyday life function as contemporary images, creating noisy clamor, Jeong Jiyoon's paintings boldly omit and exclude what is conventionally deemed essential, offering instead a sense of ordered stability, as though layered with the weight of time.

Her works feature patterned objects imbued with life through continuous strokes. While the scenes on her canvas are derived from images appropriated from media environments, they are not confined to mere depiction or reproduction. Rather, they are reinterpreted to uncover and emphasize compositional elements. The fluid, gliding brushstrokes of individual units, juxtaposed with the rhythm of scattered action painting, contrast sharply with the simplified composition, which appears as though pressed onto the canvas. This evokes the essence of "immersion," where a fleeting moment of stillness is felt amidst continuous time.

The balanced nature of Jeong Jiyoon's paintings stems from her intentional projection of gaps onto the canvas, even as she engages with the concept of immersion. Neutral tones, the proportion between the central subject and blank spaces, the composition and arrangement of the subjects, figures whose gazes do not confront the viewer directly, and the deliberate choice of anonymous Western models—all reflect the artist's systematic devices to avoid claiming the subject image as her own. This process of intentional configuration and reduction of objects is consistently evident throughout her work.

Ironically, this narrative of gaps creates a tension and curiosity for viewers, as though encountering something unfamiliar. Just as the artist experienced, viewers also shift from passive onlookers of media-derived figures to active participants, immersed in serene moments. In this process, the monochromatic blue tones meet forms radiating energy, transforming their initially cold impression into one of warmth and orderliness. They evoke a sense of freedom born from simplicity, forming the trajectory of Jeong Jiyoon's rhythmic style.
