<language of facial expressions: 표정언어 展> (2022)

갤러리 이알디 서울점은 2022년 10월 27일부터 11월 27일까지 정지윤 작가의 네 번째 개인전 <language of facial expressions: 표정언어>를 진행합니다. 2021년 이알디 부산점에서 진행되었던 <파랑> 전시가 작품 표면에 보여지는 색과 붓의 터치에 관점을 두었다면, 이번 서울점 전시는 작품 속 인물들의 표정에 의미를 두고자 합니다.

‘표정’의 사전적 의미는 ‘마음속에 품은 감정이나 정서 따위의 심리 상태가 겉으로 드러나는 모습’이며, 일반적으로는 얼굴에 감정이 드러난 상태를 뜻합니다. 사람은 보통 얼굴 근육의 움직임을 보고 타인의 감정을 추측하기 때문입니다. 최근 방영된 드라마 ‘이상한 변호사 우영우’에서 주인공 우영우 변호사가 출근 전 인물 사진을 보며 감정을 추측하는 연습을 하듯, 인간의 표정은 많은 의사를 전달하는 하나의 언어입니다.

정지윤 작가는 인터넷에서 수집한 이미지를 회화로 옮기는 작업을 해오고 있습니다. 이미지를 사실적으로 재현하기보다 단색을 사용해 독창적인 회화를 만들어갑니다. 이 과정에서 당시의 상황이나 인물의 표정은 회화의 물감에 의해 뭉개지거나 새롭고 낯선 형상으로 변화합니다. 본래의 사진에 담겼던 상황과 느낌을 변주해 다양한 해석의 가능성을 열어두는 것입니다.

작가는 수집된 사진 속 정지된 대상들을 빠르고 변화무쌍한 붓질로 표현합니다. 자유로운 붓질로 리듬감을 만들어내며, 이 과정에서 체화된 감각을 시각적으로 드러냅니다. 그림이 마치 움직이는 것처럼 보이기도 하며, 어느 부분에서는 형태를 짐작하기 어려울 만큼 복잡한 붓질이 모여 이미지가 전하는 정보보다 작품 자체의 조형성에 집중하게 합니다. 그러면서 서사와 거리를 둔 채 건조한 태도로 작업을 이어갑니다. 이러한 특징을 극대화하기 위해 모노톤에 가까운 색감을 사용합니다. 흑백사진에서 조형성이 더 두드러지듯, 회화의 조형성 역시 제한된 색감을 사용할 때 극대화된다고 믿기 때문입니다. 명암의 대비를 적절히 조정하여 화면을 구성하고, 그 흐름에 맞춰 자유롭게 움직이는 붓질은 대상을 붙잡거나 밀어내며 일렁이는 표면을 만들어냅니다.

이번 전시를 통해 실제와 허구의 경계가 허물어지고, 무심코 지나치던 현실 속에 숨은 보이지 않는 것들을 사유하며 인물의 표정에서 느껴지는 내적 감정의 언어를 들여다보는 기회가 되기를 바랍니다.

Gallery ERD Seoul is pleased to present , the fourth solo exhibition by artist Jiyun Jeong, from October 27 to November 27, 2022. While the 2021 exhibition at Gallery ERD Busan focused on the colors and brushstrokes manifested on the surface of the works, this exhibition at the Seoul branch invites viewers to find meaning in the "expressions" of the figures depicted within the frame.

The dictionary definition of "expression" is the "outward manifestation of internal emotions, sentiments, or psychological states," typically referring to how these feelings appear on the human face. This is because people generally infer others’ emotions by observing the movement of facial muscles. Just as the protagonist in the recent drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo practices identifying emotions through photographs before work, human facial expression serves as a vital language for communicating vast amounts of information.

Artist Jiyun Jeong has been engaged in a practice of translating images collected from the internet into paintings. Rather than realistically reproducing these gathered photographs, she creates unique paintings through a monochromatic palette. In this process, the original circumstances and the subjects' expressions are obscured by the paint or transformed into new, unfamiliar forms. By modulating the original atmosphere and context of the photograph, she opens up possibilities for diverse interpretations.

The artist captures stationary subjects from collected photographs with rapid and dynamic brushwork. These fluid and varied strokes create a sense of rhythm, through which she visually articulates her internalized sensibilities. Her paintings often appear to be in motion; in some areas, the brushstrokes become so complex that the form becomes difficult to discern, directing the viewer’s focus toward the formal composition of the work itself rather than the information conveyed by the image. Maintaining a detached and objective stance, she distances her work from narrative. To further emphasize these characteristics, she employs a color palette close to monotone. Believing that the formality of a painting is maximized through a limited palette—much like how the structural qualities of a black-and-white photograph often surpass those of a color one—she constructs her canvases by precisely adjusting the contrast of light and shadow. In harmony with this composition, her freely moving brushstrokes both lean into and push away from the subject, creating a shimmering, undulating surface.

Through this exhibition, we hope the boundaries between reality and fiction dissolve, allowing you to reflect on the invisible elements hidden within the reality we often overlook, and providing an opportunity to peer into the inner language of emotions felt through the characters' expressions.
