정지윤은 우리의 일상 속 어딘가 존재하는 대상과 풍경을 화면에 묵묵히 그린다. 직접 바라본 대상을 카메라로 찍어 남기거나 웹 서핑 중에 발견한 인물의 모습이 정지윤 특유의 모노톤 회화로 표현된다. 제작 과정을 조금 더 풀어보면, 작가는 일상 속에서 직접 눈에 들어온 상황이나 인물을 카메라로 포착하거나 또는 웹상의 가상 공간 속 데이터로 구축된 이미지를 회화의 소재로 사용한다. 그리고자 하는 대상을 모노톤으로 변환시키고 물감으로 작가만의 감각적인 표현을 완성하는 것이다. 따라서 그녀의 회화는 기억에 존재하는 심상을 떠올려 그리는 완전한 추상 회화도 아니며 실제 눈앞에 있는 대상을 직접 묘사하고자 하는 구상 회화도 아닌, 그 모호한 경계 속에서 자신의 회화 세계를 펼치고 있다.
특히 물감이 흘러내리거나 흩뿌려진 표현법, 형태를 뭉개거나 물감을 두텁게 올려 물성이 도드라진 기법들은 여전히 작가가 사실적 구상 회화에 몰두하기보다 대상의 표현 속에서 나타나는 새로운 감정의 표현과 조형적 실험에 집중하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 색채를 모노톤으로 사용한다는 것은 실존 대상이 품고 있는 개성과 분위기가 회화 속에서 새로이 읽힐 수 있는 가능성을 열어둔다. 이러한 색감은 상당 부분 화이트 톤의 여백을 허용하지만 화면 구성이 단조롭지 않다. 화면 속에서 두텁거나 곡선적으로 과감하게 표현하며 선적인 효과를 극대화해 화면에 사용되는 단조로운 색감 속에서 '사물과 인물, 인물과 인물, 인물과 배경'이 구분되는 효과를 만들어내며 화면에 입체감을 만들기 때문이다.
정지윤의 회화는 구체적 대상을 직접적으로 표현하지 않음으로 인해 감상자가 바라보았을 때, 자신의 시각으로 느끼며 자유롭게 해석하고 인식하게 한다. 따라서 단조로운 색을 사용한 화면과 일상적 주제의 대상을 표현했음에도 불구하고, 바라보는 사람마다 새로운 감정과 각자 해석의 의미를 부여한다.

Jiyoon Jeong creates paintings featuring subjects and landscapes she encounters in her daily life. Her signature monochromatic style depicts subjects she has either photographed herself or discovered on the internet. Jeong captures people and situations that catch her eye in everyday life using her camera or draws inspiration from data-based images found in virtual spaces on the web. She then selects a subject to paint in monotone and completes her interpretation with expressive brushstrokes. Jeong's work is not purely abstract, as it draws on images that exist within her memory, nor is it strictly figurative, as it does not aim to directly replicate the subject in front of her eyes. It is within this ambiguity that her world of painting unfolds.
Jeong's focus is on exploring new ways to express emotions and experiment with the form of her subjects, rather than prioritizing realism or figurativeness. Her preference is evident in her use of techniques such as dripping or scattering paint, distorting form, and applying thick layers of paint to highlight the physical properties of her medium. By using a monochromatic palette, Jeong opens up the possibility of examining the personality and aura of her subjects in a new light. While the color scheme primarily incorporates white tones, the composition of her paintings is far from monotonous. Bold, thick, or curvilinear lines that maximize the linear effect create a three-dimensional impression, distinguishing between objects and figures, figures and figures, and figures and backgrounds within the monochromatic color scheme of her paintings.
